A FISHERMAN'S YEAR: FISHING ADVENTURES IN ENGLAND AND NEW ZEALAND. By John Parsons.

1974 1st edition. 8vo (145 x 215mm). Pp217. B/w illustrations by Garth Tapper, end-paper maps. Blue boards, spine titled in gilt.

Month-by-month Parsons fishes alternately in British and New Zealand waters, with some chub and pike fishing in England, trout fishing in both countries, and a trout fishing trip to Kashmir. As usual the author's love of angling literature shines through. An excellent chapter on A.H. Chaytor is included. The U.K. and New Zealand issues are identical except for the dust-wrappers. That of the U.K. edition illustrates a coarse angling scene, while the N.Z. one shows an exotic river flyfishing scene. The UK picture appears on the reverse of the New Zealand dust-wrapper, and the New Zealand scene on the reverse of the UK dust-wrapper. Chapters include: Bliss on the Medway / Three times unlucky; Magic of the Darenth / Tyro at Taupo; Thames roach / The Chaytor story; Love's labours lost / Taupo smiles; Poaching chub / Silverstream apprenticeship; Perseverence pays / Spinning at Akatawara; Variety the spice of Leigh / The Constellation Caddis; Romney Marsh / The coming of the browns; India and Exmoor / Stewart and Kite; Fenland waters / First-day fanaticism; A one-eyed chub / Fly-by-night; Winter collection / Wonderful, wonderful, Whanaganui!
