A FLYFISHING DIARY: REMINISCENT OF MANY FRIENDS AND PLACES. By Hugh G. Franks.
1956 1st edition. 4to (208 x 273mm). Pp86. b/w photographs. Green cloth, titled in gilt on upper board.
A detailed record of over fifty years sport, mainly on the river Test, from the turn of the twentieth century until the nineteen-fifties. From 1911 to 1920 the author was in a small syndicate at Linhay Meads, initially with Martin E. Mosely and A.C. Poole. Their guests included F.M. Halford, Walter H. Barrett and William Senior. In 1913 Mosely's place was taken by J.W. Gieve. After 1920 the three took Mrs Silva's water at Testcombe for seven seasons; then from 1937 the author rented Mrs Disraeli's water at Chilbolton for seventeen years. There are brief references to fishing other waters, and an extensive section on railing for bass at Newhaven. Profusely illustrated with very good b/w photographs including many of well-known anglers and fishing locations. It is believed that no more than 130 copies were produced for distribution to the author's friends.
