Every day was spent in sport; coursing and shooting, hawking and fishing. There are a number of passages on trout, salmon and pike fishing, including one describing the capture of a huge pike. Thornton employed an artist, George Garrard, who made numerous drawings and paintings, some of which were used to produce the engravings in the book.
