# An epic story of big game hunting and specimen collecting in East Africa. The expedition was mounted jointly by Theodore Roosevelt on the expiry of his term as president, and the Smithsonian Museum. The expedition's PH was R.J. Cunninghame, with Frederick Selous playing a walk-on part. The expedition included noted zoologists of the day and Roosevelt's son, Kermit. "Their journey proceeded largely on foot via numerous sidetracks to Lake Victoria. After crossing Lake Victoria, the party hunted in Uganda before heading north to the Lado Enclave and then on to southern Sudan. After descending the Nile, the Roosevelts emerged from the darkest sections of the great African continent in Khartoum on March 1910." Roosevelt wrote an account of the expedition in installments as the expedition proceeded, published contemporaneously by Scribner's Magazine. Chapters include: A railroad through the Pleistocene; On an East African ranch; Lion hunting on the Kapiti Plains; On safari, rhino and giraffe; Juja Farm, hippo and leopard; A buffalo hunt by the Kamiti; Trekking through the thirst to the Sotik; Hunting in the Sotik; To Lake Naivasha; Elephant hunting on Mount Kenia; The Guaso Nyero, a river of the Equatorial Desert; To the Uasin Gishu; Uganda and the Great Nyanza Lakes; The great rhinoceros of the Lado; Down the Nile, the Giant Eland. Appendices are: Personal acknowledgements; Lists of mammals; Heller's Notes; Loring's Notes; Biological survey of Mount Kenya; Protective Colouration in Animals; The Pigskin Library.
