"Jonathan Dale" was the pen-name of Rev. Isaac Ebenezer Page, a Wesleyan minister at Alston from 1892 to 1895, and his book was a compilation of articles that had previously been published in The Angler. There is an emphasis on north country trout fishing; however, Page was aware that he writing mainly for readers in the Midlands and the south of England, and includes such chapters as "A Day's Pike Fishing On The Wye."
