BRITISH AND IRISH SALMONIDAE. By Francis Day, C.I.E., F.L.S., F.Z.S., etc.
1887 1st edition. 4to (190 x 275mm). Ppviii,299. 12 lithographic plates, 9 of them in colour, text engravings. Dark green cloth, gilt title.
"An exhaustive treatise of the British Islands, equally valuable to the Angler, the Fish Culturist, and the Scientific Ichthyologist." "The fish were coloured from nature by Miss Florence Woolward, whose accuracy in delineation needs no remark as it speaks for itself" A detailed study of Atlantic salmon, brown and sea-trout, charr and grayling. Although Day gives descriptions of the many races, varieties and local names that were recognized at this time, he begins his section on the trout thus: "... I find myself unable to accept the numerous species which have been described, believing those ichthyologists more correct who have considered them modifications of only one, which, as Salmo trutta, includes both the anadromous and non-migratory fresh-water forms."
