CHARLES ST JOHN'S NOTE BOOKS 1846-1853: INVERERNE, NAIRN, ELGIN. Edited by Admiral H.C. St. John.

1901 1st edition. Small 4to (165 x 230mm). Illustrated with 8 plates and many vignettes, mostly from the author's sketches, but including several photographs; pictorial end-papers from cartoon sketched by the author. Dark green cloth, spine titled in gilt, St. John shield on upper board.

The Introduction by the author's son, Moray Revisited, is largely a lament about the destruction of salmon by coastal netsmen. This is followed by Cosmos Innes' Memoir, and Charles St. John's Life At Rosehall (both from Sport in Moray). The rest of the book is made up from St. John's diary entries from Invererne, Nairn and Elgin, between 1846 and 1853, mostly short descriptions of sport and natural history: "April 12th [1847]. - I caught some fine sea trout in good condition in the river [Findhorn], though the water was high and the wind in the east. Some flocks of wigeon still remain. We picked up a few plover's' eggs". . . There seems to be little or no overlap between the entries here and those in Sport In Moray - the books are arranged differently, this being wholly chronological from beginning to end, while Sport In Moray is arranged in months.
