The first edition is known in two different bindings. Binding A, blue boards with black titles to spine, and Binding B, white-flecked green cloth, with gilt titles to spine. This is Binding B". The author, who is Deputy Surveyor of the New Forest, is a forester, a naturalist and an authority on this country. He naturally knows the Roe, Fallow, Red and Sika deer of his own forest area intimately, but he has also studied (and stalked) deer in Scotland and elsewhere". The author introduces the reader to the natural history and habits of the British deer species, punctuating his description with accounts of his own experiences. Good illustrations by C.F. Tunnicliffe.
