# "For the purpose of obtaining the necessary data as to the present condition of the English parks, my first step was to check up on the 395 parks which were listed by Whitaker in his 1892 survey." Whitehead sent a survey and requests for information by post. "I am pleased to say [that] almost everyone to whom it was sent favoured me with an answer, some replies coming back from as far afield as Chile and Australia. Some correspondents wrote at considerable length, and even took the trouble to send me old 'Deer books' or photographs to see." Whitehead also made numerous visits of inspection, and much of the information in this book is the result of collaborative effort in a project which took a number of years to come to fruition. Chapters include; The rise and fall of the deer parks; The management of deer; The food and feeding of deer; The diseases and afflictions of deer; Catching-up park deer; Warnham Court Park; Woburn Abbey Park; The natural history of deer; Red deer; Fallow deer; Roe deer; Non-British park deer - Pere David's deer, Chinese water deer, muntjac, sika, chital or axis deer, hog deer or para, swamp deer or barasingha, rusa deer; The deer parks of England, 1949; The deer parks of Scotland, 1949; The deer parks of Ireland, 1949; The deer parks of Wales, 1949; Deer in the zoological gardens of Great Britian and Ireland, 1949. Includes indexes (indices, if you like) to parks, paddocks, and zoological gardens in Great Britain and Ireland, and their owners, in 1949.
