Authoritative and useful introduction to intensive eel farming, based on Japanese experience of the industry. Although Atsushi Usui is given as the author, and Ichiro Hayashi as the translator, the preface states that Dr. Gordon Williamson revised the translation and added new material, as well as revising the illustrations*. This copy contains a note in Dr. Williamson's hand clarifying the extent of his own contribution: "Much of Usui's original text was out-of-date or concerned matters only relevant to Japanese readers, thus much had to be condensed or omitted. 14 new chapters had to be added to describe matter that were not covered in Usui's book". Portions of text partly and wholly by Williamson are marked separately in the page margins, whilst his picturecaptions are ringed in red. Chapters wholely by Williamson are marked on the contents page, being: 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, and 21.
