FISHING: AN ANGLER'S DICTIONARY. By Henry Beard and Roy McKie.

(1983) 1985 1st UK edition. Square 8vo (203 x 201mm) Pp94. B/w cartoon illustrations by the author.

"FISHING (fish'ing), 1.n. the art of casting, trolling, trotting, or spinning while freezing, sweating, swatting, or swearing." "Hook, line, sinker and the rules for reporting lost fish. A lexicon bringing new meaning to the art of loitering in and around bodies of water. From: ADVICE. Two or more pieces of contradictory angling information contained in a single phrase or sentence. To: ZZZZZZZ. 1. sound made by patient angler waiting for a bit. 2. Sound made by insect about to deliver one." An extensive humorous dictionary (which is actually quite funny) illustrated with apposite cartoons. Despite being first published in America, this book does not come over as particularly American, and frequently talks about Britain and Europe. The publishers bill the book as being 'revised'. Comparing this text with that of the first edition would be an instructive exercise.
