FISHING AND SHOOTING. By Earl Buxton.
(1902) 1933 reprint. Small 8vo (132 x 207mm). Ppxiv,268, ads. B/w illustrations by Archibald Thorburn. Black vignette to light green cloth, spine titled in black.
The fishing content is largely concerned with dry fly fishing on southern chalkstreams, with one short chapter on salmon. The shooting content relates to covert shooting and partridge and grouse driving. In "1914 Mr. Murray proposed to issue a cheap edition of this book, but the issue was necessarily postponed by the War, and for some time after, when the cost of printing was prohibitive. It has been necessary in this cheaper edition to omit the Prints to which reference is made in the original Preface, and which depicted the old style Fishing and Shooting as compared to the newer style depicted by Mr Thorburn. No other alterations have been made in the book." The book is divided into three sections: Fishing: Old masters and dames; The fascination of fly fishing; Fly fishing and fly fishing; Chalk stream and dry fly; A day with the mayfly; Fish and fishermen; Elementary; Flies; Odds and ends; Salmon fishing. Shooting: Attractions; Our ancestors; Our game birds; Grouse driving, walking grouse; Partridge driving; Covert shooting, a typical day; Covert shooting, as it should be; The art of shooting flying; How does one shoot?; How to hit a haystack; How not to do it; Disagreeables; Odds and ends; Rough shooting.
