Delightful sporting fiction. "Gerald Warde, described by someone in his regiment as 'a desparate chap, always at the sharp end of everything. Got three MCs and would ha' got a DSO if he hadn't told his brigadier to go to hell', comes back to Britain after the '39-'45 war. He goes for a check-up to the eminent military surgeon, Col. Gore-Ambulance, who instantly recognizes Gerald as the young cavalry officer who ruined his chances with Mary Todhunter in India in '35, and gets his own back on him by hinting he may only have a year to live. Gerald, after proper reflection and intent on getting his priorities right, decides to get as much shooting and hunting as he can in the time he has left."
