LIST OF WHARFEDALE FLIES; BY JOHN SWARBRICK (OF AUSTBY), 1807, AND J.W. SAGAR, 1890. COPYRIGHT: E. BEANLANDS.

1907 1st edition thus. 32mo. (100 x 127mm). Pp16. Printed wrappers.

John Swarbrick's manuscript list was written in 1807. A small number of transcripts were made in the early part of the 19th century, before it was published, together with J.W. Sagar's list from 1890, in 1907 by Ellis Beanlands, the secretary of the Ilkley Angling Association. Swarbrickwas a farmer from the hamlet of Austby, near Ilkley on the River Wharfe, and his list of flies is "the earliest one known which gives detailed dressings for the flies and the times of the year for which they are most suitable..." (Magee). Swarbrick's list is reproduced in Magee's book, "Fly Fishing: The North Country Tradition." The first nine pages comprise Swarbrick's patterns; Sagar's are on pages 10 to 16.
