MOSS FROM A ROLLING STONE; OR MOORISH WANDERINGS AND RAMBLING REMINISCENCES. BY CHARLES A. PAYTON, "SARCELLE" OF "THE FIELD".
1879 1st edition. 8vo (135 x 200mm). vi pp + 506 pp + 8 pp advertisements. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait engraving of the author. Green cloth, spine and upper board titled and decorated in gilt.
In two parts". Mooorish Wanderings" describes the author's travels in Morocco, where he stayed at Mogador. There is much on the country and his travels, and an account of the famine of 1878. Despite this he managed to wet a line pretty frequently. The second part, "Rambling Reminiscences," consists of anecdotes, largely about sea fishing and trout fishing in Cornwall, Ireland, France and Spain. Sir Charles Payton was angling correspondent of The Field from 1867 to 1914, writing under the pen-name of "Sarcelle". He was a keen sea-angler, and availed himself of any opportunity to fish, even if only for harbour mullet.
