All sources give 1859 as the first edition. However this edition, bound without frontispieces, clearly states 1858 on each title-page. A sporting novel with angling passages which was originally serialised in the Field". One chapter is entitled 'A day on the Thames,' and the process of fishing from a punt is minutely described". (William Senior). A three-decker sporting novel, rather in the manner of R.S. Surtees which largely concentrates on social one-upmanship, fox hunting and shooting.
