NOTES ON FISH AND FISHING. By J.J. Manley, M.A. With illustrations.

# 1877 1st edition. Small 8vo (125 x 185mm). Ppviii,363. Illustrated with chapter-heading vignette engravings. Ex-library copy.

# The author rather plays down the value of his book. He includes a particularly good chapter on angling books and book collecting along with notes on ichthyology and the history of angling, including many quotes from early authors. He then goes on to describe the habits and fishing methods for the various species (excluding salmon, a subject which he felt required a book in itself). Throughout the book the River Thames is a recurring theme, clearly the author's most familiar water, and he concludes with a chapter on Thames angling. Chapters include:- Ichthyology; The literature of fishing; Fishing as a sport; Fishing as a fine art; The trout; The grayling; The jack; The perch; The carp; The tench; The barbel; The bream; The chub; The roach; The dace; Small fry: - the gudgeon; Small fry: - The bleak, the pope, the loach; Small fry: - The minnow, the stickleback; Small fry: - The miller's thumb, the crayfish; Thames Angling.
