OVER THE REEFS. By Robert Gibbings. With engravings by the author.
1948 1st edition. 8vo (140 x 220mm). Ppvi,240. B/w engravings by the author, map end-papers. Gilt flower motif to red cloth, spine titled and decorated in gilt.
Taking advantage of the conclusion of international difficulties in 1945, the author sets out to make an eighteen months' tour of Polynesia, setting out from New Zealand to Fiji, the Tonga, Niue, Samoa, Tokelau, the Cook Islands, Manihiki and Penrhyn Island, the Society Islands (Tahiti), then back to New Zealand, 3,700 miles in all. Gibbings was a professional artist and leading light in the revival of wood engraving between the wars. A genial narrative with some good illustrations.
