POACHERS VERSUS KEEPERS: AN AMUSING AND INSTRUCTIVE TREATISE CONCERNING POACHERS AND THEIR ARTIFICES, dealing with the many phases of poaching directed at game both furred and feathered. Simplified and arranged by Gilbertson and Page, Limited.
(1894) 1983 new edition. Small 8vo (120 x 188mm). Ppviii,89. Orange-brown boards, spines titled in gilt.
"Following on our 'Pheasant Rearer's Manual,' we herewith offer to our customers a second volume of the series. Our present work contains a fund of interesting information, collected by our firm during the many years we have been engaged in the business of supplying the gamekeeper with the requirements of his profession. Our remarks are principally confined to that poaching directed against pheasants, partridges, hares, and rabbits, judging other as outside our province; however, we venture to assert that wherever the gamekeeper may be situated, and whatever may be the nature of his charge, he will find something within especially applicable to his duties. The many interesting anecdotes related, concerning both keeper and poacher, should prove amusing and instructive; we do not exaggerate the reality of the dangers accompanying the keeper's daily path, rather erring in a contrary direction; recent events have amply proved that to thoroughly fulfil the duties of his calling he must be a man of nerve, therefore, to those sportsmen who imagine his life an easy one, and free from care and worry, we earnestly commend a perusal of the following pages, confident they will afterwards agree with us - that no labourer is more worthy of his hire. (The reception which the first and second editions of this work received has induced us to issue to issue a third edition.)"
