REMINISCENCES OF JOE BOWMAN AND THE ULLSWATER FOXHOUNDS. By W.C. Skelton.
(1921) 1980 facsimile edition. 8vo (140 x 214mm). Pp184,vi. Sepia photograph plates.
Originally published in 1921 by Atkinson & Pollitt, at the "Westmorland Gazette" Office, this reprint was printed by Titus Wilson & Son Ltd. on behalf of the Ullswater Foxhounds. "This edition has been reprinted from the original by the Committee of the Ullswater Foxhounds as a fund-raising exercise and is also available in a limited quantity as a hard-back." This is a copy of the paperback issue. This book came about by accident, having begun life as a set of articles in The Westmorland Gazette. "So matters stood, until one day, after a sparkling hunt on the northern shores of Ullswater, we adjourned to one of those beautiful homesteads where the old-time honours are still observed. Here I was introduced to a circle of new acquaintances by the young lady of the house as 'the gentleman who is writing Joe Bowman's book.' To say I was taken by surprise by such an anticipatory remark is to put it mildly. To disillusionize the fair follower of the chase, however, appeared ungallant, so for that reason and partly as a souvenir of one of the pleasantest days I ever spent at a hunt, and also out of affection for 'Hunty' himself, I determined to make an effort to live up to the gentle impeachment." Chapters include: Early days; Origin and formation of the Ullswater Pack; The early days of the Ullswater; Joe Bowman takes command; some ancient gleanings of the Ullswater Country; Joe Bowman's strenuous forty years; Under Mr. W.H. Marshall's Mastership; Joe Bowman resumes; Reminiscences of Joe Bowman and the Ullswater; Reminiscences of Joe Bowman and the Ullswater (continued); Reminiscences of Joe Bowman and the Ullswater (continued); Reminiscences of Joe Bowman and the Ullswater (continued); Ullswater Foxhounds and Terriers (by C.R. Farrer and Mossop Nelson); Lakeland sports and local characters; Some strong men and wonderful feats; Local hunt songs.
