RIVER ANGLING FOR SALMON AND TROUT, by John Younger, with a Memoir of the Author; together with a Treatise on the Salmon, and a List of the Tweed Salmon-casts.
(1840) 1864 3rd edition. 16mo (110 x 160mm). xii pp + 220 pp. Not illustrated. Binding C. Plain red cloth, spine titled in gilt. The frontispiece was omitted from this issue.
Younger's salmon fly patterns pre-date those of Scrope (1843), and represent the classic old Tweed flies. For this edition the editor has excluded "Some fresh hints". . . and the "Analysis of theTweed Fishery Act," (from the 1860 edition) but has added two new chapters: "Worms and worm-angling, by the editor;" and "Scrap, by the editor". This latter consists of notes on water insects, and short biographies of two noted Border anglers, Jock Smail and James Baillie. This copy lacks the frontispiece, or any sign that it was ever inserted. It is a presentation copy, "With the publisher's compliments, 30th September, 1919". Taken together, these facts point to this being a later reissue of the sheets from 1864.
