SALMON IN TRUST. By Derek Mills.

"In the 1950s and 60s salmon populations were under severe threat. Hydro-electric power and poaching gangs were indiscriminately killing large numbers of fish and illegal drift netting was widespread. As if that wasn't enough the dreaded salmon disease UDN was found in many British rivers. There were uncontrolled and expanding open seas fisheries off Greenland, Norway, Ireland and the Faroes. With so many threats to the future of salmon it was obvious that something had to be done. The 1966 Annual Conference of the Salmon and Trout Association proposed that an independent Trust should be set up to undertake research, education and management of salmon stocks. The Trust was the idea of a group of like-minded salmon enthusiasts, and many others closely involved with salmon fisheries and management gave their support to the scheme. A year later, in 1967 the Atlantic Salmon Research Trust came into being, the forerunner for what is now known as the Atlantic Salmon Trust. This book provides a history of the Trust, its work and increasingly international influence, and considers the great advances made in science and fisheries management that may help to secure a future for the Atlantic salmon."
