SEA FISH AND HOW TO CATCH THEM. By W.B. Lord, R.A. First edition.
1862 1st edition. 12mo paperback (105 x 165mm). viii pp + 52 pp + iv pp advertisements. Illustrated with drawings in the text. Title-page printed in black and red. Green/blue wrappers, bound into a recent cloth binding.
"This was the first vade mecum or handbook published on the subject of sea fishing considered as a sport, and was very well received." (Lord's obituary in The Field, 12th April, 1884). The first edition is largely about bottom fishing for sea fish. While it gives detailed instructions for a tying a fly (red German wool body / white goose feather wings), makes it plain that this is for fishing as part of a string of mackerel feathers. The second and third editions, however, do talk specifically of casting a fly.
