SEA FISH AND HOW TO CATCH THEM. By W.B. Lord, R.A. Third edition.
(1862) ND (1863) 3rd edition. 16mo paperback (105 x 165mm). Ppviii,104. Text engravings including several of salmon flies. Illustrated card covers. Price eighteen pence.
"This was the first vade mecum or handbook published on the subject of sea fishing considered as a sport, and was very well received." (Lord's obituary in The Field, 12th April, 1884). The first edition is largely about bottom fishing for sea fish. While it gives detailed instructions for a tying a fly (red German wool body / white goose feather wings), makes it plain that this is for fishing as part of a string of mackerel feathers. The second/third editions, however, talk specifically of flyfishing "...at the mouths of tidal rivers and estuaries" for salmon sea-trout and bull trout, giving tying instructions for five salmon flies and six sea-trout flies. They also briefly mention flyfishing for mackerel and herring.
