.# The autobiography Lt. Col. Philip Brand Fielden, 1919-1998". His youth was a prelude to the Second World War, which took him as a troop leader in an armoured car regiment to the Western Desert of Egypt. Here his experiences included taking part in the breakthrough of the enemy lines at El Alamein, reported in the national press as 'the greatest raid of them all'. Recruited to General Sir Miles Dempsey's banner, he saw the invasion of North-West Europe and later accompanied the General to South-East Asia and the Middle East. Re-joining The Royals in BAOR he took his squadron to Berlin, followed in 1951 by a stint in the Suez Canal Zone. When with the Territorial Army in London, he twice rode his own horse to win the Grand Military Gold Cup at Sandown Park. After commanding The Royals in Germany, Aden and Malaya, he retired from the army in 1961 and was for ten years employed by the Jockey Club". In his later years, Fielden devoted much time to travel and exploration with his wife, Caroline. On their travels they managed to fish in many of the world's finest angling locations and one chapter of the book covers their angling experiences in the UK and Northern Europe, North and South America, South Africa and South-East Asia.
