"To every lover of a dog this little book is sympathetically dedicated. In writing this life of my dear old dog 'Teufel,' I have made it my particular study to adhere strictly to absolute truth in facts and incidents throughout, my desire and endeavour being to impress upon the reader the keen intelligence and loving qualities which Teufel undoubtedly possessed and displayed during the nine happy years of faithful companionship. I trust that this little book may be the means of creating a wider and more profundly sympathetic affection towards the animal creation at large". Chapters include: How the story came to be written; In which Teufel is born; He comes up to London; I am advised to execute Teufel, but decline with thanks; Teufel goes on the loose; Mrs. Halfpenny's parlour, and the bill for 'damidges'; We take the house-boat, and live on the River Thames; Ratting and fishing; I turn animal painter; Teufel is lost; We return to town for the winter; Which tells of my marriage and the jealousy of Teufel; The studio and some of its inmates; About the fox and the jackdaw, and other sitters; Queer visitors; Teufel and the animals' ball; A few observations upon dog nature; Strolling players; Teufel falls ill and I take him to see the doctor; We go to the dogs' hospital; The death of Teufel; We bury him*. This copy has the book-plate of Sybil Waller, an interior designer of the era, daughter of Pickford Waller, artist, collector and designer. The book-plate shows a two-headed bird in front of a flaming torch, the top of which has three wreathed heads. The book-plate design is dated 1909 and is probably by Pickford Waller.
