# New foreword by Jim Casada. Sutherland is one of the few author-adventurers to rival W.D.M. Bell. Sutherland's elephant hunting was as frequently illegal as legal, at first ranging over Mozambique and German East Africa, and "by 1912 he had shot more elephant than any other man alive." During the Great War, Sutherland served in the Nyasaland Intelligence Field Force. After this, he took up his old career again in the former German East African territories, Uganda, the Belgian Congo, the Congo and French Equatorial Africa. "In 1929 James Sutherland fell victim to a conspiracy against the whites by the Azande tribe, and he was poisoned. Although he survived, he never fully recovered. He died in 1932 and was buried near Yubo (in) the Sudan." Chapters include: The hunter's life; The fight with the four; Touch and go; Kom-kom; Swasuri and the leopard; Makanyanga the philosopher; Man-eating lions; Vicious elephants and a cantankerous buffalo; The struggle of the titans; Ups and downs in the Mbwehu Bush; The White Trail; The raid; Stirring times at Lecundi; Snakes; where a man can raise a thirst; Big game and big game hunting; Malinganiro and his ivory; Terrier v. elephant; The tropics and the call; Some notes on the life of the African native; The wild man of the Colombepo Mountains; Hippo and lion; Superstition and a sequel; Nerves at Ntunkwae; Mad buffalo and faithless wife; My two wild dogs; The gentle art of poisoning; Two leopard stories; Mahometan faith and elephant meat; A few thrills at Bangalla River; Some peculiar foods; The Lord of the River; Three slave girls; A few days' hunting; Love and farewell; The hunter's end.
