The author's aim is to induce all who can to participate in a manly sport, and to advance the interests of those who can look to the Gun for pleasure, health or occupation." "The first issue of 'The Breech-Loader' was sold within four months of its publication, and the favour since shown by the sporting public has encouraged the author to print yearly revised editions until, at the present time, seven have been exhausted. Instead of making the many alterations needed to include later developments and inventions, it has now been thought advisable to condense certain portions [of this book] and re-write it. In doing so, much new matter has been added and the book improved both as regards arrangement and conciseness, and the author trusts that it will, in its present fom, be still more acceptable to those who have need to consult it for all that a modern gun should be and do."
