A comprehensive manual of shooting as practised at the turn of the century and in the inter-war years". The revision of an established book is a much more difficult book than writing a new one, but after careful re-reading I have come to the conclusion to alter but little of the original body, because by doing so I might eliminate that valuable knowledge of the past upon which all progress is based. ...The only section of this work which has been subjected to considerable revision is that relating to 'The Choice of a Gun.' This portion has been cut down and added to, and even so, that of the old which remains will still be rather too profound for the beginners, but will no doubt be highly prized by the accomplished shot who made his selection a generation ago". (A.F. Randall in his foreword to this revised fifth edition). Chapters include:- Ancient actions; Ancient pistols to automatic and elephant rifles; Ancient and middle age shooting; The choice of a gun; Single-trigger double guns; Ammunition; The theory of shooting; The practice of shooting; Form in game shooting - I; Form in game shooting - II; Crack shots - I; Crack shots - II; Pointers and setters; The pointer; English setters; Strenuous dogs and sport in America; The Irish setter; The black-and-tan setter; Retrievers and their breaking; The Labrador retriever; Spaniels; Grouse that lie and grouse that fly; Red grouse; Methods of shooting the red grouse; The latest methods of preservation of partridges; Partridge bags and driving; Varieties and species of the pheasant; Pheasants; Bringing pheasants to the guns; Shooting wild duck artificially reared; Wild wild-duck; Rabbit shooting; Hares; Snipe; Woodcocks; Black game; Pigeon shooting; The modern shooting school; Deer in Scotland; Big game; A varied bag; Diseases of game birds.
