"In presenting this work to the subscribers, the Editor begs to inform them, that it originated with the late Mr. Barnard, of the Malton Coursing Club, a gentleman altogether competent to its execution. In consequence of his untimely death the work, in which he had made very considerable progress, has been brought to its present state by a friend, in whose hands the unarranged materials had been places, and who is strongly impressed with the persuasion of its great utility to the lovers of the leash". "The vignettes were engraved by Thomas Mosses, 44, Amwell-street, Pentonville, from some drawings of the late Mr. Barnard".
