THE FISHERMAN'S BEDSIDE BOOK. Edited by David and Gareth Pownall.
1980 1st edition. 8vo (160 x 240mm) Pp320. Duotone photographs and illustrations. Dark blue boards, spine titled in gilt.
A good anthology with interesting illustrations. I had been put off it by the horrible jacket design, and the fact that it was published by W.H. Smith. However, it is a nice collection and well worth a read. Contents include:- Seven marlin swordfish in one day by Zane Grey; Pike by Ted Hughes; It came as a big surprise by Byron Rogers; Caviare by H. and G. Papashvily; The escape of Ika by H.E. Towner Coston; The mahseer by Jocelyn Lane; The mighty mahseer; Boiled trout by Izaak Walton; Trout with shrimp by Robert Carrier; The inmates' fishing trip by Ken Kesey; Piping in the salmon by J.F. Todhunter; Fish and the shadow by Ezra Pound; Big two-hearted river by Ernest Hemingway; Ancient anglers by Charles Chenevix Trench; The "Bishop Browne" story by Derek Barker; Among the sea monsters by Hugh Copley; Bake carp with soft roe stuffing by Jane Grigson; The uncatchable trout by William Faulkner; Cleopatra's joke by William Shakespeare; Border incident by David Pownall; Bear fishing by John McPhee; Fish soup by Peter Feibleman; Herring the King; One the Danube by Negley Farson; The end of jaws by Peter Benchley; The fish by Rupert Brooke; On holiness, foolishness, and the carp by Herbert Palmer; The story of the record salmon; One dry-cow fishing as a fine art by Rudyard Kipling; Roach by Jane Grigson; The hunchback trout by Richard Brautigan; The salmon of knowledge by Lady Gregory; In the Andes by Negley Farson; Night fishing by Hugh Falkus; Lioness and fish by John Smith; Salmon in danger by Anthony Netboy; The pike by Edmund Blunden; About pike by R.
