FISHING AND FISHERS. By J. Paul Taylor, First Hon. Sec. Fly-fishers' Club. With introduction by "Red Spinner" (W. Senior). Illustrated.

THE FLY MAKER'S HAND-BOOK: illustrated with coloured plates representing upwards of fifty of the most useful artificial flies for trout and grayling fishing. By an angler.

(1855) 1886 (2nd edition). 24mo (106 x 134mm). Pp45 +1 ad. Illustrated with 9 chromolithograph plates (not hand-coloured as most records say) showing 50 flies. Limp green cloth, upper cover titled and decorated in gilt.

This copy confirms the date of publication of this 2nd edition as 1886. Our researches show that the book was first published in the 1850s, thirty years earlier than other authorities state. This second edition was newly illustrated with chromolithograph plates by the then owner or manager of Edmondsons, Henry Whitty (1841-1930). A single page advertisement is bound-in at the rear. It states: "For all necessary materials for Fly Making, as described in this work, and all matters connected with angling, see our new illustrated catalogue. Published by Henry Whitty, At Edmondson's, Anglers' Depot, 15, Basnett Street, Liverpool. Established 1819". The WandS supplement lists the first edition as being published in 1887 and gives: "Simpkin, and Liverpool Printing etc. Co. 1887". Both that date and the mention of Simpkin are incorrect.

Book Description Rather used. An advertisement for Henry Whitty's catalogue of fly making materials is bound-in after the half-title (at an angle - a binder's fault). The remainder has significant foxing and signs of use and a little staining but this is still a reasonab
