The author, an American, describes a year in East Africa, where he shot more or less every available species but was particularly interested in lions, hippos, rhinoceros and buffalo. The author lists fifty-four games species collected and twenty-two species of game birds. He also appends a discussion of the relative merits of the various rifles he used. The Land of Footprints was first published by Doubleday and Page in New York in 1912. The British edition was published by Thomas Nelson and Sons in 1913, followed by numerous reprints in a slightly smaller format and with fewer pages.
