The author explores the significance of ultraviolet light to the trout and the angler. "Did you ever ask: Why does a Royal Coachman, which doesn't imitate any natural insect, appear as an insect to trout? why use "a dark fly on a dark day"? Why will a pattern work well one day to imitate a hatching mayfly, but the same pattern is refused the very next day during the same hatch? why did the old-timers insist on natural blue dun hackle?" We might think that flies look plausible but the trout see it differently. Well worth a read.
