THE SALMON RIVERS OF SCOTLAND. By Augustus Grimble. 1913 third edition. Binding A.
(1899) 1913 3rd edition. 8vo (140 x 220mm). Ppxvi,310,ads. B/w photograph plates, 3 maps, one folding. Binding A. Blue cloth, spine titled in gilt, gilt angling scene on upper board. This first issue has the page-edges trimmed square, so is slightly smaller than the other issues. The boards have a blind-ruled frame and the edges are bevelled.
A comprehensive survey of the salmon fishings in Scotland at the end of the nineteenth century. Details the topography, named pools, ownership and recorded rod and net catches of all of the principal rivers, including many anecdotes, and even describes the most effective flies and gives their dressings. "In condensing into one book my four volumes of The Salmon Rivers Of Scotland, want of space has necessitated the omission of the whole of the text illustrations, together with four chapters which endeavoured to deal with the salmon problems of the day. As far, however, as information is concerned, this book contains the concentrated essence of the original four volumes." This statement appears in both the 1902 (400 pp) edition and the 1913 (310 pp) edition. Despite the 1913 edition having a smaller number of pages, the text-size is smaller and it includes many revisions and additions which are not found in the 1902 edition. Most of the plates are b/w photographs, though a few are based on paintings, and a few of these are by Archibald Thorburn.
